Une origine Gallo-romaine

Idéalement placée à l'origine au confluent de la Dordogne et de la Garonne, Bourg a joué un rôle fort dans l'histoire régionale. Dans le parc de la Citadelle, la résidence gallo-romaine de la famille des Pontii devait avoir des proportions importantes. Sidoine Appolinaire (vers 430/vers 487), auteur de poèmes et de belles lettres qui constituent un témoignage essentiel sur le Vème siècle, a adressé à son ami Pontius Léontius, un poème qui évoque la situation de Bourg avec ses murailles près de la confluence de la Dordogne et de la Garonne. Il décrit la grande résidence des Pontii avec ses thermes, ses pièces de réception, ses greniers, son atelier de tissage… Les Pontii ont pour ami Ausone (vers 310-vers 395), qui est le précepteur de leurs enfants. Ausone, poète et écrivain érudit d'origine gauloise et empreint de civilisation romaine, possède une villa aux Gogues érigée sur les coteaux de Bourg à la fin du IVème siècle. Paulin de Nole (353-395) la qualifie de "demeure rivale de celles de Rome". Il ne reste aujourd'hui de la villa d'Ausone que les thermes entourés de vignes. Le long texte de Sidoine Apollinaire montre le maintien, chez les aristocrates du Vème siècle, de la culture latine et du mode de vie à la romaine, malgré la place des peuples barbares dans l'Empire.

A Gallo-Roman origin

In the park of the Citadel, the Gallo-Roman residence of the family of Pontii had to have important proportions. Ausone, poet and erudite writer of Gaul origin and printed by Roman civilization, possesses a villa in Gogues set up on the hillsides of Village at the end of the IVth century. Paulin of Nole ( 353-395 ) qualify her(it) as " rival house of those of Rome ". There is a villa of Ausone only thermal baths surrounded with vineyards today. The long text of Sidoine Apollinaire shows the preservation, at the aristocrats of the Vth century, of the Latin culture and of the Roman type lifestyle, in spite of the place of the barbaric peoples in the Empire
